MISSION OF THE EAST GRANBY LAND TRUST

The Mission of the East Granby Land Trust is to acquire and preserve open space and to promote public appreciation of the natural environment of East Granby.

  • The East Granby Land Trust (EGLT) is a private, non-governmental, non-profit organization incorporated in 1974 for the purpose of conserving the natural resources and unique features of East Granby.
  • The EGLT is one of the largest landowners in town, with 322.2 acres (2.8% of the town total of 11,328) that are open to the public for passive recreational activity including hiking, photography and nature study.
  • All of the land owned by the Land Trust is to be preserved in its natural state forever.
  • Among our properties are portions of the priceless Metacomet Trail, acreage abutting the Newgate Wildlife Management area on both ends, and Griffin Marsh on Holcomb Street near Route 20.
  • We depend solely on members and volunteers from the community for support.

  • What is a Land Trust?

It is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt, service organization. The purpose of the Land Trust is to conserve the natural resources of our town - water resources, marshes, woodlands, ridge tops, unique natural and historic sites by acquisitions or easements.

    Why was it organized?

To preserve the natural features of the land, within specific desires of donors. As a private organization outside the realm of politics, our Trust can assume the responsibility of land management.

How can it help you...      and our town?

The conservation of open land adds to the value of neighboring private properties and improves the quality of life for the entire community. According to the Planning and Zoning Commission, "the rural character of East Granby is its predominant asset and has attracted most of the town's residents."
